FAQS

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy has been around since the late 1970’s in Japan and literally means ‘cold therapy’. Whilst inside the chamber, the body is surrounded by a -140ºc liquid nitrogen mist for a maximum of 3 minutes. It is a dry, non-invasive, treatment, designed to speed up recovery and improve overall wellbeing.

How does it work?

Cryotherapy tricks the brain into thinking it is hypothermic, which stimulates your immune system and boosts your metabolism. The body scans itself for poorly functioning parts and heals itself rapidly. Your blood circulation will improve, and the production of serotonin and endorphins (natural painkillers and feel-good substances) and natural anti-inflammatory processes will be set into motion.

What are the health benefits to cryotherapy?

Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) is used by athletes to decrease recovery time and improve performance and by people seeking recovery from musculoskeletal pain. Other reported benefits include weight loss and reduced inflammation. There have also been reports of WBC helping cancer patients, dementia sufferers, reducing anxiety / depression, improving eczema and treating migraines to name a few.  WBC is also good for mental health and wellbeing. With each treatment, endorphins and serotonin are released, which lead to us having more energy and being in a good mood.

Are there any health conditions or circumstances that prohibit use of cryotherapy?

  • Cold intolerance
  • Cryoglobulinaemia
  • Cryofibrinogenemia
  • Cold Utricaria
  • Open wounds and ulcers
  • Gangrenous lesions
  • Thromboembolic changes and inflammation in venous system
  • Agammaglobulinemia
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Local blood flow disturbances
  • Cancer
  • Acute respiratory or lung diseases of various origins
  • Severe anaemia
  • Pregnancy after the 4th month
  • Under the influence of drugs, especially antipsychotics and alcohol
  • Metal pins or plates
  • Type 1 Diabetes
  • If you suffer from any of the above, we recommend consulting your GP prior to booking an appointment.

How often can I use the chamber?

Athletes are known to use it twice a day, so as often as you feel is necessary. The more regularly you use WBC, the more you should feel the positive effects.

What do I wear in the chamber?

Women: Dry socks, slippers (provided by us), gloves (provided by us) and your undergarments or bathing suit (no underwire).

Men: Dry socks, slippers (provided by us), gloves (provided by us) and your briefs/shorts.

All piercings & jewellery must be removed from the neck down.

Is there a minimum age to use the chamber?

Yes, 16 with an accompanying consenting guardian / parent, otherwise 18. Please note you may be asked for ID if the therapist is unsure of your age.

What is Cryolipolysis?

This is simply ‘fat freezing’ otherwise known as ‘cool sculpting’. It is a non-invasive, non-surgical medical procedure that removes fat cells from beneath the skin.

How does Cryolipolysis work?

It works by placing an area of fat into the machine cup that then warms the area before bringing the area to a freezing temperature. Frozen, dead fat cells are then excreted out of the body through the liver within several weeks of treatment, revealing full results of fat loss within three months.

The treatment lasts for approximately 60 minutes. People often bring a book, or tablet etc to keep them entertained during the procedure.

Is it safe?

The complication rate is low and the satisfaction rate is high. As it is non-invasive, it is one of the safer methods of fat removal. As the treatment begins you may feel some pressure, pulling and intense cold. This soon subsides, and most people don’t experience any further discomfort throughout the treatment.

How often can I have the treatment?

Dependent on recovery from previous treatment, the wait time should be anywhere between 6-12 weeks. This enables the body enough time to react naturally and dispose of the fat cells naturally.

When will I see results?

As the body excretes the dead fat cells via the lymphatic system, it can take up to 3 months for full results to be seen. A healthy diet, with moderate exercise and drinking lots of water during this time, will only improve the positive result.

Is the result permanent?

Yes, Cryolipolysis results are permanent. However, you must keep in mind that Cryolipolysis cannot prevent an increase in fat cells due to pregnancy or any other causes. A healthy diet, with moderate exercise and drinking lots of water during this time, will only improve the positive result.

Can any part of the body be treated?

Yes, where stubborn fat deposits are present.

Can you have more than 1 area treated at a time?

Yes, we can treat multiple areas simultaneously within the same session.

Are there any side effects?

Some common and temporary side effects are:

Numbness – This usually disappears quickly, but some may experience this for up to one month.

Redness, swelling or firmness of the treated area, as well as bruising can occur in some people, as well as tingling, stinging or pain after treatment. Results and patient experience varies. These are dependent on a number of factors such as age, medical history and lifestyle

SPOT CRYO

Local cryotherapy is intended for short-term local/spot treatment of specific points on the body (face, joints etc.). The stream of extremely cool air bursts at temperatures ranging from -110°C to -150°C. Each area is treated for a period of approximately 10- 15 minutes.

Can any part of the body be treated?

Yes, other than the genitalia.

Can you have more than 1 area treated at a time?

Yes, we can treat multiple areas within the same session.

Benefits of spot cryo:

Localised Cryotherapy is treatment targeted to a specific area of the body. This can be applied for longer periods allowing deeper penetration. This is ideal for sporting injuries, soft tissue damage, micro-vascular dysfunction and reducing inflammation. The cold has an analgesic effect, influencing nerve endings and reducing metabolic activity.

Local Cryotherapy is also great for improving eczema, pigmentation and broken capillaries with our Cryo facials leaving your skin with a youthful glow.

Local Cryotherapy can be used on a targeted area by people who are unable to use full body Cryotherapy, such as those with mobility issues.

Our Approach to Recovery.

Recovery isn’t just for professional athletes. At The CryoLab, we support people from all walks of life — from those managing everyday aches and pains, to individuals recovering from injury, staying active, or simply prioritising their health and wellbeing. Whether you train regularly, spend long hours at a desk, manage physical work, or just want to feel better in your body, our recovery and wellness treatments are designed to support real people with real lifestyles.

Our Treatments
REDUCED RECOVERY TIME & INFLAMMATION

Unlike traditional ice packs, cryotherapy can address multiple areas of inflammation at the same time. Because it does not directly freeze muscle tissue, it allows the body to recover without prolonged downtime, helping many people return to training or daily activity sooner.

Maximise Athletic Performance

By supporting reduced muscle soreness and inflammation, recovery-focused treatments can help athletes maintain consistency in training. Improved recovery allows for better movement quality, more effective training sessions, and the ability to perform at a higher level over time.

Pain Management

Pain and inflammation are common challenges for people managing joint conditions, injuries, or ongoing discomfort. Cryotherapy is widely used as part of pain-management and recovery routines, helping to reduce inflammation, ease muscle tension, and support improved circulation – which may contribute to reduced pain and improved mobility.

METABOLIC SUPPORT & BODY COMPOSITION

Exposure to extreme cold during cryotherapy stimulates the body’s natural thermoregulatory response, which can temporarily increase energy expenditure as the body works to maintain its core temperature. As part of a wider recovery and wellness routine, cryotherapy may support metabolic activity and body composition when combined with movement, nutrition, and an active lifestyle.
Cryotherapy is not a weight-loss treatment on its own, but it can be used as a supportive tool alongside training and healthy habits.

Recovery Done Properly

From cryotherapy to contrast therapy, our treatments are designed to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and support faster, more effective recovery.
